Chelsea Move Six Clear

After the last International break of the year, the Premier League returned with a weekend featuring a few real surprises while only one team scored more than twice in a low scoring programme.

Chelsea extended their unbeaten run with a 2-0 win at home to West Brom with Diego Costa giving the league leaders an 11th minute lead before Eden Hazard notched a second in the 25th minute.

West Brom went down ten men just four minutes later with the dismissal of Claudio Yacob and kept the Blues out for the remaining hour of the game.

Everton sit ninth after securing a 2-1 win at home to West Ham with Romelu Lukaku opening the scoring for the Toffees in the 26th minute but the Hammers drew level in the 56th minute thanks to a strike from Mauro Zarate but Everton bounced back and regained the lead and all three points in the 73rd minute with a strike from Leon Osman.

Leicester and Sunderland shared the points in a 0-0 draw meaning the Foxes are without a win since the famous 5-3 win at home to Manchester United while Sunderland will be happy to keep a clean sheet away from home given their bad record on their travels this season.

Manchester City came from behind at the Etihad to secure a 2-1 win at home to Swansea City with the visitors taking a surprise lead in the ninth minute through Wilfried Bony but the hosts were level within ten minutes as Stevan Jovetic swept in an equaliser. Man City completed the comeback in the 62nd minute as a strike from Yaya Toure put them ahead and proved to be enough to secure the points.

Newcastle continued their superb rise up the table and sit fifth after claiming a narrow 1-0 win at home to QPR with the crucial strike coming in the 78th minute courtesy of Moussa Sissoko and is a result that leaves the Rangers bottom of the table.

After claiming their first win of the season in the final game before the break, Burnley made it two wins in a row with a 2-1 victory away to Stoke with the Clarets racing into a 2-0 lead with Danny Ings scoring twice in as many minutes in the 12th and 13th minute. Jon Walters reduced the deficit for the Potters in the 32nd minute but they were unable to prevent Burnley from securing their first away win of the season.

Manchester United moved into the top four with a 2-1 win away to Arsenal with the Gunners suffering a double blow in the 65th minute with Kieran Gibbs hitting into his own net to hand the visitors the lead but in doing so injured Wojciech Szczesny leaving them with a huge task to comeback. Wayne Rooney doubled the lead for United in the 85th minute before Olivier Giroud set up a tight finish with a stunning strike in the 90th minute but United held on for the win.

Super Sunday began with a huge surprise as Crystal Palace came from behind to stun Liverpool in a 3-1 win, Rickie Lambert scored his first Liverpool goal in the second minute but Dwight Gayle levelled in the 17th minute. Both sides looked to take the lead but a clever cross from Yannick Bolasie in the 78th minute saw Joe Ledley put the Eagles in front and the win was confirmed just three minutes later when Mile Jedinak swept in a stunning free kick for 3-1.

Tottenham moved into the top half with a 2-1 away to Hull in which they came from behind after former Spurs midfielder Jake Livermore opened the scoring in the eighth minute. Hull went down to ten men with the dismissal of Gaston Ramirez in the 50th minute and Tottenham soon utilised the extra man to good effect with Harry Kane levelling in the 61st minute before Christian Eriksen claimed a last-gasp winner in the 90th minute.

Monday Night Football saw second place Southampton salvage a last-gasp draw away to Aston Villa with the hosts taking the lead in the 29th minute through Gabriel Agbonlahor and with the minutes ticking down, Villa were on course for a surprise win but their hopes were dashed by an equaliser from Nathaniel Clyne for 1-1 to force a share of the points.
