Ahead of a seven
week break before the quarter finals, the Capital One Cup fourth round took
place across Tuesday and Wednesday with a few surprises on the
cards.
Tuesday night began with the first upset of the round as Championship high-fliers AFC Bournemouth played host to top flight West Bromwich Albion with the Cherries sealing a 2-1 win. Eunan O'Kane put the hosts ahead in the 49th minute but hopes of a famous win were dented five minutes from the end as Tommy Elphick's own goal served as a leveller for the Baggies. However, Bournemouth responded instantly and regained the lead with a strike from Callum Wilson which proved to be enough to secure a place in the last eight.
In an all Championship meeting, Fulham hosted Derby and the Cottagers looked
to be in control ahead of the interval after taking a 2-0 lead courtesy of a
brace from Moussa Dembele in the 27th and 45th
minutes. Derby made it 2-1 with a Chris Martin penalty just before half-time.
However, the second half proved to be a showcase of a comeback from Derby who
levelled in the 47th minute through Johnny Russell before going ahead with Simon
Dawkins 54th minute strike.
Fulham were in danger of
horrific turnaround when Jeff Hendrick gave the Rams a 4-2 lead with the win
sealed three minutes later with Simon Dawkins second goal for
5-2.
Sheffield United staged a superb late fight back to advance into the last eight at the expense of Milton Keynes Dons with the Dons taking a 67th minute lead after Benik Afobe converted from the penalty spot. The Blades levelled through Michael Higdon in the 86th minute before the striker fired in a second in the 90th minute to complete the comeback and seal the win.
In an all Premier
League meeting, Liverpool hosted Swansea with the Swans looking to complete a
Merseyside double after dumping
out Everton in the previous round.
The visitors went ahead in the 65th minute when Marvin Emnes fired across goal and beat
Brad Jones to open the scoring. Liverpool levelled superbly in the 86th minute
with a clever cross from Fabio Borini finding Mario Balotelli who fired past Gerhard
Tremmell. Extra time looked to
be on the horizon as time ticked down but Liverpool sealed the win after
Federico Fernandez was dismissed with the resulting set-piece finding Dejan Lovren who headed the winner at
the back post.
Despite looking
like a mismatch on paper, League Two side Shrewsbury Town came just nine
minutes away from forcing extra time at home to Premier League table toppers
Chelsea who claimed a 2-1 win. Didier Drogba put the visitors in front
in the 48th minute before the Shrews levelled in the 77th minute through Andy
Mangan but they were dealt a
cruel blow in the 81st minute when Jerome Grandison was powerless to
prevent scoring an own goal that sealed Chelsea's place in the last
eight.
Wednesday night
began with top-flight Tottenham sealing a 2-0 win at
home to Championship side Brighton and Hove Albion with Eric Lamela giving Spurs the lead in
the 54th minute before the win was sealed in the 74th minute by Harry Kane who
continued his fine scoring spree.
In the first of two all Premier League meetings, Stoke City hosted in-form Southampton with the Saints living up to their billing as favourites by taking a sixth minute lead through Graziano Pellé's strike. Shane Long increased the lead to 2-0 on the half hour mark before Steven N'Zonzi reduced the deficit in the 49th minute. Mame Diouf levelled for the Potters in the 82nd minute before they suffered a double blow in the 88th minute with the dismissal of Peter Crouch followed Graziano Pellé's second goal which sealed a 3-2 win.
The final game of the round saw a repeat of last season's fourth round as holders Manchester City hosted Newcastle United but there was no repeat of the result as the Magpies stunned the Blues with a 2-0 win that started superbly as Rolando Aarons put them in front inside six minutes. Despite naming a strong side, City were unable to draw level and saw their grasp on the trophy ended in the 75th minute after a superb run from Moussa Sissoko saw him fire past Willy Caballero to seal a famous victory.
The fifth round draw saw the three remaining Football League sides all drawn at home with the pick of the ties being Bournemouth being drawn against Liverpool while Derby host Chelsea and Sheffield United will play host to Southampton. There will be at least one top flight side in the last four after Tottenham and Newcastle were drawn to face each other in the remaining tie.
Two ties will be televised with the matches between Sheffield United/Southampton and Tottenham and Newcastle on Tuesday 16th December missing out to Derby v Chelsea on that night while Liverpool's trip to Bournemouth will be televised on Wednesday 17th December with both covered by Sky Sports.
