Blue At the Top But Red on The Field

A new month in the Premier League may have begun but there was nothing really new in this week's programme with the top four all victorious with seven sides claiming clean sheets.

Saturday's lunchtime kick-off saw a confident Newcastle side on a three game winning streak host Liverpool who may have had one eye on the trip to Madrid on Tuesday. The Magpies looked to be the better of the two and took the lead in the 73rd minute with a strike from Ayoze Perez and came close to a second when Remy Cabella broke clear but held on for a slim 1-0 win.

Arsenal sealed back-to-back wins with a comfortable 3-0 win at home to Burnley with the Clarets looking good for a point past the hour mark before a quick double blow put Arsenal in control. Alexis Sanchez opened the scoring in the 70th minute before Calum Chambers added a second just two minutes later with the win confirmed late on by Alexis Sanchez's second in the 90th minute.

Chelsea maintained their lead at the top with a 2-1 win at home to fellow Londoners QPR with a stunning strike from Oscar giving the hosts a 32nd minute lead but the visitors fought back and equalised through Charlie Austin in the 62nd minute. However, QPR's hopes of claiming a point suffered a crucial blow in the 75th minute when they conceded a penalty which Eden Hazard converted well to seal the win for the hosts.

Everton maintained their place in the top half with a 0-0 draw at home to Swansea who for the second time in a week ended a trip to Merseyside with ten men. Jonjo Shelvey received his marching orders in the 72nd minute after a duo of bookings but Everton were unable to use the man advantage and had to settle for a point. Southampton continued their superb start to the season with a 1-0 win away to Hull with the crucial strike coming inside three minutes through Victor Wanyama.

Leicester's poor run continued with a 1-0 defeat at home to West Brom with the Baggies claiming a fortunate bit of luck in the 47th minute when Esteban Cambiasso was powerless to prevent the ball going into his own net after a deflection.

West Ham staged a second half fight back to salvage a 2-2 draw away to Stoke who led 2-0 courtesy of strikes from Victor Moses and Mame Diouf in the 33rd and 56th minute but the Hammers battled back and reduced the deficit on the hour through Stewart Downing before Enner Valencia equalised in the 73rd minute to claim a point for his side.

Super Sunday began with the Manchester Derby between Manchester City and Manchester United with United suffering a blow late in the first half with the dismissal of defender Chris Smalling in the 39th minute. City eventually benefited from the advantage of an extra man in the 63rd minute when Sergio Aguero gave them the lead, a lead which was enough to seal a four successive win over their city rivals.

The second game of the afternoon saw Tottenham stage a smash and grab 2-1 win away to Aston Villa with the hosts taking a 16th minute lead through Andreas Weimann but the game turned around in the 65th minute when Christian Benteke was dismissed. Tottenham attempted to draw level and did so from an Eric Lamela corner in the 84th minute with Nacer Chadli hitting past Brad Guzan before Harry Kane swept in a last-gasp free-kick to seal all three points.

Monday night saw Sunderland look to secure a first away win of the season while ending a horrendous Monday night record dating back 12 years as they visited Crystal Palace and the visitors started well by taking a 31st minute lead through Steven Fletcher. Palace levelled with some luck as Wes Brown turned the ball into his own net in the 55th minute before Jordi Gomez regained the lead for Sunderland in the 79th minute. Palace captain Mile Jedinak was dismissed in the 87th minute as part one of a double blow for the Eagles who conceded at third goal in the final minute courtesy of Steven Fletcher who ended Sunderland's terrible away record.
