Champions League Matchday Five Summary

The penultimate matchday of the group stage saw a lot of permutations for teams to advance and as a result, 11 sides have qualified for the last 16 which includes the English duo of Arsenal and Chelsea while Manchester City and Liverpool face a tough final game in order to seal a safe passage.

A
Atletico Madrid sealed their place in the knockout stages with a comfortable 4-0 win at home to Olympiakos who still have aspirations of advancing despite the loss, Garcia put the home side ahead in the ninth minute before a Mandzukic treble in the 38th,62nd and 65th minutes wrapped up all three points.

Juventus improved their chances of advancing with a 2-0 win away to Malmo whose best outcome is a Europa League place, Llorente gave the Italian's a 49th minute lead before Tevez added a second two minutes from the end with the Swedes ending the night with ten men after Johansson's 89th minute dismissal.

B
Real Madrid maintained their 100% record with a slim 1-0 win away to Basel with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring his 71st Champions League goal in the 35th minute which proved to be enough to seal all three points. The Swiss side remain second and favourites to join Real in the last 16 after a late slip-up from Liverpool saw the Reds draw 2-2 in Ludogorets.

Dani Abalo put the Bulgarians ahead after only three minutes before Lambert headed in his first European strike for the Reds in the eight minute to make it 1-1. Henderson put the visitors in front in the 37th minute with a strike that looked to be enough for the win but Terziev sealed a point for the home side with an 88th minute equaliser to leave all three sides with a chance to advance in the final week.

Bayer Leverkusen advanced despite suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Monaco who themselves are in with a good chance of advancing after a Ocampos strike in the 72nd minute ensured that their fate would be decided in the final week. Zenit improved their chances of advancing with a 1-0 win at home to Benfica with the crucial strike coming from Danny in the 79th minute with the visitors' evening made worse by the sending off of Luisao in the 90th minute.

Despite both already being confirmed in the knockout stages, Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund faced off in a battle to top the group with the Germans sitting atop the group despite suffering a 2-0 defeat to the Gunners who secured all three points with strikes from Sanogo and Sanchez in the second and 57th minutes.


Anderlecht secured a Europa League place at the expense of opponents Galatasaray with the Belgians sealing a 2-0 home win which saw Mbembe put them ahead in the 44th minute. The visitors hopes suffered a blow in the 83rd minute with the dismissal of Inan before their slim chances were dashed by Mbemba's second goal in the 86th minute.

A stunning fightback from Manchester City kept their hopes of advancing alive as they ended Bayern Munich's 100% record with the the Germans suffering a double blow early with the dismissal of Benatia coupled with a converted penalty from Aguero in the 20th and 21st minutes. Bayern battled back and levelled through Alonso in the 40th minute before Lewandowski gave them a 45th minute lead. Time looked to be running out for City but Aguero defied the odds to net in the 85th and 90th minutes to secure a 3-2 win.

CSKA Moscow and Roma can both still qualify after drawing 1-1 meaning along with Man City they sit on five points, Berezoutski gave the Russians the lead in the 43rd minute before Roma levelled in the final minute through Totti to keep their hopes alive.

Barcelona romped to a 4-0 win away to Apoel which sees them sit second and already confirmed in the knockout stages after a first goal from Luis Suarez in the 27th minute saw them go ahead. Lionel Messi struck in the 38th and 57th minutes to make it 3-0 before Rafinha was dismissed for the visitors in the 70th minute ahead of the dismissal of Apoel's Amorim in the 84th minute. Messi made history with his third goal as he moved to an all-time best 73 goals in the competition with an 87th minute strike.


PSG sit atop the group and already through to the knockout stages with the title of group winners to be decided in their final game at the Nou Camp but the French side remain unbeaten after securing a 3-1 win against Ajax with Cavani putting them in front in the 33rd minute. Klaassen levelled for the Dutch side in the 67th minute but it proved to be in vain as Ibrahimovic made it 2-1 in the 78th minute before Cavani hit a third for the home side in the 83rd minute to seal the win.


G
Chelsea sealed top spot and a place in the knockout stages with a comfortable 5-0 win away to Schalke with Terry giving them the lead inside two minutes before Willian added a second in the 29th minute. Kirchoff scored an own goal in the 44th minute to make it 3-0 before Drogba and Ramires rounded off the rout in the 76th and 78th minutes.


Sporting Lisbon put themselves in a great position to advance with a 3-1 win against Maribor with Mane giving the home side the lead inside 10 minutes before Nani added a second in the 35th minute. Nascimento gave Maribor a lifeline with an own goal in the 43nd minute but their hopes were dashed in the 65th minute by a third goal for the hosts from Slimani which was enough to claim all three points.

Porto secured top spot and a place in the knockout stages with a 3-0 win away to BATE with Herrera giving them a 56th minute lead which was swiftly followed by a second from Martinez in the 65th minute. Tello confirmed the win for the visitors late on with an 89th minute strike.


Shakthar sit second and are already through to the knockout stages but suffered a 1-0 defeat to Athletic Bilbao who are odds on to seal a Europa League place thanks to a a winning goal from San Jose in the 68th minute.
