Top Two Break Clear

The first midweek programme of the season sparked off a busy festive period and one that could shape the title race with the current top two breaking clear after comfortable wins.

Tuesday night began with the tie between Burnley and Newcastle with the Clarets looking to continue their recent unbeaten form, they took the lead in the 34th minute with an effort from George Boyd but the Magpies were soon level with a 48th minute equaliser from Papiss Cisse which sealed a point for the visitors.

Leicester looked to end a poor run of form as they hosted a Liverpool side also in mixed form and the Foxes started the better as they benefited from an own goal from Reds 'keeper Simon Mignolet in the 21st minute but the visitors were level just five minutes later via a stunning strike from Adam Lallana.

Steven Gerrard gave Liverpool the lead in the 54th minute before the home side were dealt a blow in the 63rd minute with the dismissal of Wes Morgan before Jordan Henderson wrapped up the points with a strike in the 83rd minute for 3-1.

Manchester United remain in the top four after 2-1 win over Stoke with Marouane Fellaini giving the home side the lead in the 21st minute only to have his effort cancelled out in the 39th minute by a Steven N'Zonzi strike.  Juan Mata sealed the win just before the hour with a 59th minute strike that sees them close up on fierce rivals Manchester City.

Swansea sit just three points off the top four after securing a 2-0 win at home to strugglers QPR but the home fans were left to wait for an impact with the opening goal not coming until the 78th minute through Ki before the points were wrapped up by an 83rd minute strike from Wayne Routeledge.

Aston Villa moved cleat of the bottom three with a win away to Crystal Palace with the crucial goal coming after only 32 minutes through injury-ravaged Christian Benteke who will look to kick on after securing all three points for the visitors.

West Ham continued their superb form which sees them sit comfortably in fifth after claiming a 2-1 win away to West Brom in which they came from behind due to the Baggies taking an early lead with Craig Dawson's 10th minute strike. The Hammers drew level in the 35th minute through Kevin Nolan before the win was sealed by a 45th minute goal from James Tomkins.

Wednesday night saw the remaining eight sides face off with Arsenal hosting high-fliers Southampton in the televised game but despite the Gunners taking all three points they were lucky too after an Alexis Sanchez strike in the 89th minute came just minutes after the visitors had gone down to ten men after Toby Alderweireld had been forced off injured.

Chelsea maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a comfortable 3-0 win at home to city rivals Tottenham with Eden Hazard getting them off the a good start with the opener in the 19th minute, Didier Drogba doubled the lead just three minutes later to give the visitors a mountain to climb but the points were sealed in the second half by a 73rd minute strike from substitute Loic Remy.

Everton missed the chance to move back into the top ten as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Hull despite taking a 34th minute lead through Romelu Lukaku as the visitors secured a point with an equaliser from Sone Aluko in the 59th minute.

Manchester City moved clear of third placed Southampton with a comfortable 4-1 win away to Sunderland but after 10 minutes the visitors were behind courtesy of Connor Wickham's opener but they were soon on level terms when Sergio Aguero continued his fine scoring form with a 21st minute equaliser. Stevan Jovetic gave City the lead in the 39th minute before they moved clear in the 55th minute via Pablo Zabaleta's strike. The rout was completed in the 71st minute with a second for Sergio Aguero and a fourth for City who remain second.
