After a short turnaround from the midweek programme, there were a few surprises in the Premier League while six sides featured in goalless draws.
Saturday's lunchtime kick-off saw table toppers Chelsea travel to Newcastle with hopes of extending their unbeaten season but were dealt a mighty blow by a Magpies side buoyed by recent good form. Papiss Cisse opened the scoring for the home side with a strike in the 57th minute before adding a well crafted second in the 78th minute, Chelsea needed a huge comeback to maintain their unbeaten streak and were boosted by the dismissal of Steven Taylor for the hosts and an 83rd minute strike from Didier Drogba but it was in vain as Newcastle held on to secure a famous victory.
In the five afternoon matches, only two saw a goal with a trio of goalless draws the main focus of the 3pm kick-offs. Hull and West Brom shared the points in a tie which neither will be too proud of given their status at the wrong end of the table while Liverpool and Sunderland also failed to make an impact in a game where he first shot on target came as late as the 63rd minute. The match between Tottenham and Crystal Palace surely should have had goals given the precarious defences of both sides but neither could breakthrough as they shared the points.
QPR moved out of the bottom three with a 2-0 victory at home to fellow strugglers Burnley with Leroy Fer giving the home side the lead in the 51st minute before Charlie Austin confirmed the win with a second goal in the 74th minute before being dismissed just two minutes later for a second bookable offence but the Clarets were unable to use the numerical change to their advantage and slipped to a defeat that leaves them just one place off the bottom.
Stoke continued a run of tough games as they hosted Arsenal but unlike their previous two results, they staged a shock in claiming a 3-2 victory over the Gunners. Peter Crouch opened the scoring inside the first minute with his effort added to by efforts from Jon Walter and Bojan Krkic in the 35th and 45th minutes for a 3-0 lead. Bojan Krkic had a second and Stoke's fourth chalked off and it was a double blow as seconds later Asenal were awarded a penalty in the 68th minute which Santi Cazorla swept home. Aaron Ramsey added a stunning second just two minute later but the comeback was halted by the dismissal of Calum Chambers in the 78th minute while Stoke held on for the points.
The evening kick-off saw Manchester City host Everton which began badly for the home side with star striker Sergio Aguero leaving the field in a bad way after just five minutes. Yaya Toure gave City the lead in the 24th minute with a successful penalty which proved to be enough to secure all three points with a 1-0 win ahead of a pivotal week.
Super Sunday began with a clash between two sides eager to mount a challenge for the European places as West Ham hosted Swansea, The Swans opened the scoring with a strike from top scorer Wilfried Bony in the 19th minute but went into the interval level after Andy Carroll's 41st minute equaliser. Carroll struck again with a second in the 66th minute in the first part of a double blow that saw Swansea 'keeper Lukas Fabianski dismissed just two minutes later. Diafra Sakho added a a third for the hosts in the 87th minute to wrap up a 3-1 win.
Part two of Super Sunday saw Aston Villa host basement boys Leicester with the visitors taking a 13th minute lead through top scorer Leonardo Ulloa but were quickly pegged back by Ciaran Clark's 17th minute equaliser. A rare strike from Alan Hutton put the home side in front in the 71st minute and Leicester's hopes of levelling suffered a blow in the 80th minute with the dismissal of Paul Konchesky while Villa held on for a 2-1 win.
Monday Night Football saw a huge clash between top four contenders Southampton and Manchester United with Robin van Persie giving the visitors the lead inside 12 minutes but they were pegged back by a a Graziano Pelle equaliser in the 31st that ended a barren run for the Italian. In the battle of the strikers, it was the Dutchman who prevailed as he sealed the win for the visitors with his second strike in the 71st minute to seal a 2-1 win
